Adorned in red, white and blue, Miss Liberty was named for the liberty that brought Charles Looff to the United States.

Liberty went through a structural restoration in 1992. The wood in her netting, especially in the bottom row, was down to just fibers. Everything was worn down in detail, so she received an extra dose of TLCC (Tender Loving Carousel Care)! She always shows a lot of wear, which means that she is a favorite among the riders.

Miss Liberty is "off balance". Since she has a longer back than front, she tilts to the rear. This gives her the look of speed, especially with her lunging, outstretched neck. (This effect is from the Illions influence in the later Looff machines.)

Personal note: She also has the distinction of being the sole reason that this website came into existance. When I came across a picture of my grandmother taken with Liberty around 1915, and later found that Liberty is still in service, I decided that our world-class carousel needed its own website! - Gary Nance
